After a two-year agricultural diploma at Kromme Rhee Agricultural College, he completed a course in agricultural irrigation design at the Cape Technikon, after which he was employed by Elgin Co-operative. In 1993 he applied for and landed the job as assistant manager on an Elgin farm, where he remained for 14 years.
