Makhathini Gin cotton project

Benefitting 30 farmers association in Jozini, KwaZulu-Natal and started by National Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and the KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

Why was it started?
The Trust’s long term objective is to establish a profitable commercial vegetable farming business in the area that will provide KZN and the country as a whole with a source of high quality vegetables that are produced in a sustainable manner and employ more people in the process.

How was it done?
ADA’s intervention
Phase 1: Installation of Irrigation, refurbishment of farm dwellings, procurement of tractors and other farm implements, fencing of farm dwellings, and procurement of vegetable production inputs
Phase 2: Rehabilitation of dams, irrigation installation, procurement of farm implements and production inputs.
Phase 3: Provision of vegetable production inputs, and construction of farm pack-house. The Trust has formed a joint venture with Just Veggies and also supplies established retailers.

Social and Economic Implications
The farm employs 77 workers, 25 of whom work on a full-time basis.
