Started by KZN Agriculture Department in 1998, benefitting communal sheep farmers
Why was it started?
Empowering communal sheep farmers by pooling their resources to increase productivity and profit.
How was it done?
The project aligns with the agriculture action plan as well as the agrarian transformation strategy. Farmers were mentored and taught about wool classification and markets. A central shearing building was built for shearing as well as storage. Farmers were also advised to swap their sheep for those that produce more and a better quality wool.
Social and Economic Implications
There is an increase in profitability for those farmers involved. The shed has created employment opportunities for locals.
